#554
This 10” round clock is made from one of my favorite stones that I have cut and polished. The stone is predominantly grey with a strong black jagged vein outlined with white on both sides. Cut perfectly, this gives the perfect visual impression of a sound wave. I had previously made a bookmatched, natural edge clock from this stone (#516) which has these veins meeting their mirrored partner at an angle that looks like a mountain peak at the top with a tree rising from the center. I had three slices left from this stone, two of which are consecutive and so could be bookmatched, but were smaller and a third slice that was smaller still. After a span without inspiration, this arrangement presented itself, creating a triptych with the three stones embedded in black epoxy with mica swirls.
This clock features custom copper “flame” clock hands and diamond shaped numbers at 12, 3, 6, and 9, all with a blue/green patina. A flame painted solid copper bonsai tree strikes contrast on this piece with a weeping willow leaf pattern and exposed roots. Flame painting is a unique art form that can take copper and transform it into a colorful masterpiece using a blowtorch to discolor the copper into many vibrant hues.
