This clock. was an experiment in “electroplating”. Electroplating is a process in which a thin layer of one metal, in this case copper, is deposited onto the surface of another metal or conductive surface, usually through the use of an electric current. By painting the rim of this stone with graphite which is “conductive” I was able to coat the rim with copper and then apply a blue/green patina using a salt and ammonia vaper bath like I do for all of my patinaed copper. The process of electroplating is complicated and involves some nasty chemicals, so after doing a few things with it, I moved on to other process, but this clock is the apex of those experiments.
At 8” wide by 6.75” tall, this beautiful grey granite stone really pops with the border of blue/green patina. The roots and branches of the baren, solid copper wire bonsai tree literally blend into the rim of the slab. Delicate copper numbers decorate the face at 12, 3, 6 and 9 and the custom Godwood "flame" shaped copper hands finish the piece off nicely.
